Is Anchor Uno yoghurt New Zealand made?

Yes, Anchor Uno is made right here in New Zealand using fresh Anchor milk.

Why is Anchor Uno good for my child?

Anchor Uno is a delicious probiotic yoghurt made specifically with your kids in mind. Its smooth texture is free from bits so you’ll know they’ll eat it. It also naturally contains a range of essential dairy nutrients, including protein, and is a source of calcium to help support growing bones.

What age can I give my child Anchor Uno yoghurt?

Anchor Uno yoghurt is suitable for children aged 3 years and over, providing a delicious serve of dairy, which includes protein and calcium. While the smooth texture is designed with kids in mind, there is no reason why older kids and adults could not enjoy Anchor Uno as a delicious snack too.

Why have you changed your Anchor Uno yoghurt recipe?

We have committed our support for the Healthy Kids Industry Pledge, an initiative coordinated by the New Zealand Ministry of Health. As part of our pledge, we committed to reformulation of products, where appropriate, to ensure children and their families have access to healthier food choices. The original Anchor Uno yoghurt recipe was considered a Formulated Supplementary Food for Young Children, with the addition of the vitamin and mineral bundle. This meant we had to add a certain quantity of fat to meet to the energy requirements per serve for this category. It also meant that under the Heart Foundation’s Food and Beverage Classification system, Anchor Uno yoghurt (150g serve size) was considered an ‘occasional’ food rather than a ‘sometimes’ or ‘everyday’ food. In line with our pledge, we wanted to ensure all Anchor Uno yoghurt products were suitable for children to enjoy as part of a healthy diet, rather than an occasional treat. We did some research and asked consumers why they bought Anchor Uno yoghurt. Consumers told us they were not buying the products for the immunity support bundle, and that sugar was more important. Therefore, we decided to reformulate Anchor Uno yoghurt, decreasing the fat content and removing the immunity support bundle, to make it a healthier yoghurt choice for kids which is also the lowest sugar kids yoghurt on the market.

Are the Uno pouch lids a choking hazard

The caps aren’t suitable for kids under 3 years old, however we can assure you the cap was specifically designed not to be a choking hazard (the large cap was specifically designed to alleviate any concerns of a choking hazard.) We’d always recommend parental supervision for any children who are playing with Uno Click Caps.

Are the caps safe for my children?

Yes, the caps are made from Polyethylene plastic which is food contact safe. If you have any further concerns please give us a call on 0800 103 778 or email support@anchor.co.nz.

Can you put the Uno pouches in the freezer?

You could put the Uno pouch in the freezer, however it might make it a bit tricky to drink the yoghurt! The great thing about the pouch is that it provides a mess-free way for little ones to enjoy Uno yoghurt. For best results we recommend refrigerating below 4 degrees celsius.

Nutritional Information

Is it okay for my child to eat Anchor Uno yoghurt regularly?

Yes. New Zealand dietary guidelines recommend at least 2-3 serves of milk and milk products a day for preschoolers and children aged 12 years and under, and at least 3 serves a day for young people aged 13-18 years1. One 150g pottle of Anchor Uno yoghurt counts as one serve towards your child’s daily dairy intake. This is a standard serve size, so may seem large for younger children, however the portion can be spread throughout the day e.g. half at breakfast, and half as an afternoon snack. Or you could opt to try one of our smaller Anchor Uno yoghurt sizes (100g pouches or pottles). If you would like dietary advice tailored to your child’s specific needs, we recommend you speak with a health professional.

What is a probiotic?

The term probiotic means “for life” and is used to describe live bacteria that give a beneficial effect when eaten in the right quantity2. Studies have reported that probiotics may play an important role in digestion and immunity. However, not all probiotics are the same – each strain has different properties and the way they work will differ from one probiotic to the next.

If I am giving my kids probiotics already, is it okay for them to also have Anchor Uno?

Probiotics have a long history of being used in fermented foods and are considered very safe for the general population to consume. Although there is no recommended maximum intake for probiotics, they come in many different forms and may perform different actions in the body so there is no ‘one size fits all’ rule for what quantity of probiotics should be consumed. The amount of Bifidobacterium lactis probiotic in Anchor Uno is not likely to present any risk to children already consuming probiotics. However, as always, we recommend you speak with a health professional for dietary advice tailored to your child’s specific needs.

How much sugar is in Anchor Uno yoghurt?

Is there added sugar in Anchor Uno yoghurt?

Why have you added sugar to Uno?

A small amount of sugar can be helpful to improve the taste of nutrient-rich foods like yoghurt – just as you might add honey and fruit to unsweetened yoghurt at home. The sugar in the fruit preparations used in Uno also has a functional purpose. It can be challenging to make a no added sugar fruit yoghurt because the sugar acts as a preservative to help slow down the loss in quality of the fruit over time.

When reading an ingredient label, how can I tell if a product has added sugar?

All Anchor Uno products clearly label sugar on the ingredients label.

However, it is important to be aware that added sugar can be hidden in the ingredients list as they don’t always get called ‘sugar’ which is easy for us to spot. Other forms of added sugar may be seen in the ingredients list as fruit juice concentrates, coconut sugar or corn syrups to name a few.

Therefore, when comparing sugar content, it’s important to refer to the sugar content per 100g within the nutrition information panel.

What makes Anchor Uno the lowest sugar kids yoghurt brand?

According to Nielson data (NZ Sales Data) as at September 2018, the top 5 kid’s yoghurt brands in New Zealand are:

·         Anchor Uno

·         The Collective Suckies

·         Moogurt

·         Meadow Fresh Goodies

·         Yoplait Petit Miam

Anchor Uno products are lower in sugar per 100g than the above listed brands.

Is Anchor Uno yoghurt a good source of calcium?

Yes, Anchor Uno is a source of calcium, with around 20% of a child’s daily calcium requirements in every 150g serve. Anchor Uno is available in smaller 100g pottles and pouches, which are also a source of calcium, providing >15% of a child’s daily calcium requirements in every 100g serve. However, calcium requirements do vary, depending on age and gender.

Is Anchor Uno Gluten Free?

Yes, Anchor Uno is gluten free.

Is Anchor Uno suitable for vegetarians?

No, Anchor Uno contains beef gelatine to give the yoghurt the thick, smooth texture so is not suitable for vegetarians.

Is Anchor Uno okay if my child is lactose intolerant?

Lactose intolerance is a condition where people may be unable to tolerate significant quantities of lactose (the naturally occurring sugar in milk) as they have a shortage of the enzyme (lactase) which breaks the lactose down to digest it. The severity and symptoms of lactose intolerance may vary from person to person but many people may be able to consume some dairy products, such as hard cheese – which is naturally very low in lactose – and yoghurt – which contains live cultures which have already broken down some of the lactose.

Lactose intolerance is different to cow’s milk allergy which is a severe and potentially life- threatening condition where all dairy products must be strictly avoided. Anchor Uno yoghurt is NOT suitable for someone with a dairy or cow’s milk allergy.

If you have questions about lactose intolerance or dairy/cow’s milk allergy, speak with a health professional for confirmation and advice specific to your child’s needs.

What are the allergens in Anchor Uno?

The main allergen in Anchor Uno yoghurt is milk. Anchor Uno contains no other ingredients that are required to be declared as common allergens; however, we recommend you read the ingredients list carefully and consult with a health professional if you have any concerns about a specific allergen.
